The Leapfrog Group is proud to introduce a new program through the Leapfrog Judie Burrows Education Institute: a learning collaborative—supported in part by AARP—created to assist hospitals that serve a disproportionately high number of low-income and uninsured patients.
The learning collaborative will provide structured guidance, data-driven insights and peer-to-peer learning opportunities to help participating hospitals advance their patient safety initiatives. The program will begin by addressing the prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), key components of the Patient Safety Indicator 90 (PSI-90) and the largest weighted measure set in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The program will coach hospital participants on preventing these events including detecting the impact of racial and ethnic bias impacting patient outcomes.
“The learning collaborative brings together the nation’s leading experts to provide essential resources and support to hospitals that play a vital role in caring for our most underserved populations,” said Missy Danforth, Senior Vice President of Health Care Ratings at The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals serving a disproportionately high number of low-income and uninsured patients often lack access to educational opportunities like this. Through the Leapfrog Judie Burrows Education Institute, we’re proud to take this step to help bridge that gap and connect these hospitals with the tools they need.”
Leading the initiative as Curriculum Director is Dr. Ron Wyatt, MD, MHA, Former Chief Quality Officer at Cook County Health and Senior Fellow, IHI. Dr. Wyatt is an internationally recognized expert in patient safety, healthcare quality, and reducing disparities in care.
“This learning collaborative represents a significant step forward in making patient safety a priority across all hospitals, especially those serving our most vulnerable populations. By addressing PE/DVT prevention first, we are tackling a critical issue that directly impacts patient safety,” Dr. Wyatt said.
