The Leapfrog Group Visits 2024 Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes

November 20, 2024

This Diabetes Awareness Month, Texas Health Huguley Hospital welcomed Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, and Jen Bowring, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) North Texas, along with Dr. Rajesh K. Garg, a leader in diabetes care and member of the ADA Standards of Care Committee to their hospital. The visit highlighted their recognition as one of only 17 hospitals nationwide designated as a 2024 Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes, an achievement that underscores a hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional care for individuals living with diabetes.

“It was exciting to visit Texas Health Huguley, where their leadership in caring for their patients living with diabetes makes them a national role model,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, an independent national patient safety watchdog. “We are thrilled to recognize hospitals leading the charge in improving patient safety for people living with diabetes through this initiative with the American Diabetes Association.”

During their visit, Leah Binder and the ADA team toured Texas Health Huguley’s state-of-the-art facilities, engaging with their leaders, team members and staff to learn more about the innovative approaches the hospital implemented to enhance diabetes care. These conversations provided valuable insight into how their Diabetes Center of Excellence works tirelessly to improve patient outcomes.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition, which reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate care for individuals living with diabetes,” said Angela Hodges, Diabetes Center of Excellence Manager at Texas Health Huguley Hospital. “Our dedicated team is passionate about improving patient outcomes through innovative approaches and personalized care.”

The Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes program is first-of-its-kind and evaluates hospitals based on their care for diabetic patients during admission, stay and discharge. It combines the ADA’s 2024 Standards of Care in Diabetes with Leapfrog’s hospital safety and quality standards to set a high bar for excellence in quality of care. The program aims to address the heightened risks faced by the 8 million people with diabetes hospitalized each year, including complications like amputation, coma and death. Studies show that people with diabetes are more likely to experience harm in hospitals, especially Black, Indigenous, and Latino patients. Recognized hospitals implement protocols for blood glucose monitoring, surgery preparation, insulin planning and coordinated discharges to ensure safe, high-quality care.
